“A mate,” the artist mused. “He needs a mate.” This thought sparked the creation of The Swimmer, a weather vane sculpture here at Kitsilano Pool.

I am excited to share the story of The Swimmer with you. It is more than just a sculpture. The Swimmer is a beloved icon.

Let’s dive into the tale of how this artwork came to be. Artist Doug Taylor conceived The Swimmer after meeting an older man. The man regularly swam off Stanley Park. Taylor wanted to create a companion for him.

The first version was built in 1993 for the Artropolis exhibition. It was placed in Stanley Park. Sadly, a log destroyed it. But the Parks Board didn’t give up. They found donors Mary and Herb Auerbach.

The current Wind Swimmer was installed at Kits Beach in 1996. This version is crafted from wood, steel, aluminum, lead, and bronze.

Notice how it moves. The mechanism is specially engineered. When winds exceed 55 mph, it turns sideways. This slows it down.

In 1999, The Swimmer was redesigned. It ensures its durability and visual appeal.

The Swimmer isn’t just a static object. It interacts with the environment. It dances with the wind. It reflects the spirit of Kitsilano.

Many residents consider The Swimmer an icon. It embodies the active lifestyle. It stands as a symbol of community. It is a testament to the power of art.

Take a moment to appreciate The Swimmer. Feel the breeze. Imagine the older man swimming in Stanley Park. Think about the artist’s vision. Consider the community’s embrace.

The Swimmer represents connection. It connects us to art. It connects us to nature. Also, it connects us to each other.

So, as you leave Kitsilano Pool, remember The Swimmer. Remember its story. Remember its significance. Let it inspire you to find your own “mate”. Let it encourage you to pursue your passions.
