“A stunning day for a walk” someone said. That’s how my adventure on the Southern Walkway began. Right here at the start near Oriental Parade. This isn’t just any walk. It’s a 10.6 kilometer journey through Wellington’s heart. From the bustling city to the rugged coastline. It weaves through the Town Belt. A green corridor planned back in 1840 to keep the city close to nature. Imagine a city that designed its green spaces into the urban fabric.
The Southern Walkway starts near Oriental Bay beach. It’s easily identified by a wooden sign and a map. Take a picture of the map. You might need it. The path initially takes you across Mount Victoria’s western face. Expect some steep climbs in the first two kilometers. The beginning is on concrete paths. But soon you’ll be walking on forest trails. Pink bollards mark the way. Don’t worry about getting lost. It’s not that difficult. The first two kilometers are the hardest. But you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views.
If you want to visit the Mount Victoria lookout. It’s a short detour. It will add some time. But the view from the lookout is truly special. After Lookout Road you continue on tracks winding down to Crawford Road. Crossing Crawford Road is a bit annoying. Then it’s up to Mount Albert via Truby King Park. This park is named after the founder of Plunkett. An organization that supports children. This section has beautiful pine trees. The climb is steep but worth it for the views.
From Mount Albert the path descends. You’ll pass through more greenery with more views. You’ll reach Houghton Bay Road. Cross the road turn right and enjoy a coastal walk to Island Bay. You can swim at Island Bay or visit Shorland Park. Regular buses depart from the bus stop near Shorland Park. They’ll take you back to the city center. So there you have it. The Southern Walkway. A beautiful walk with amazing views. A blend of city and nature. A perfect way to experience Wellington.
