Who remembers the thrill of Iverson Mall’s grand opening in 1967? The Shops at Iverson then known as Iverson Mall was a revolutionary space. It was the first fully enclosed climate-controlled shopping mall in the Washington DC area. A true marvel of its time.

Imagine the excitement. Two anchor stores Montgomery Ward and Woodward & Lothrop opened their doors. Sixty stores filled the 500000 square foot space. Former Maryland Governor J Millard Tawes even cut the ribbon for Montgomery Ward’s opening. It was a ten million dollar investment a huge undertaking for the time.

The mall quickly became a hub for the community a place to shop and socialize. Kids and teens flocked to its corridors. Sumie’s Docktor’s Pet Center and George’s Radio & TV Store were just a few of the unique stores drawing shoppers. Iverson Mall was more than just a shopping center. It was a social gathering place for the DC area.

But times changed. The opening of nearby Landover Mall in 1972 affected Iverson Mall’s popularity. Its fountains were removed during renovations in 1985. The anchor stores eventually closed. They were replaced by discount stores.

However Iverson Mall persevered. In 2008 a new slogan was adopted. “You Can Find it All at Iverson Mall” proclaimed its renewed commitment to serving the community. More recently a thirty million dollar renovation was planned. The plan included an outward facing design with a main street atmosphere. New features were planned like a wood and glass facade energy efficient upgrades and updated amenities.

The Shops at Iverson continues to evolve. It remains a significant part of Hillcrest Heights’ history. It has stood the test of time adapting to changing trends and continuing to serve its community. From its innovative beginnings to its ongoing evolution The Shops at Iverson is a true testament to resilience and adaptation. The mall remains a popular shopping destination. It continues to be a vibrant part of the community.
