The Longgang River, once a conduit for industry, now flows as the heart of this green artery. Shenzhen, a city that exploded in population by over 9 million in just 40 years, faced the challenge of urban flooding and waterway degradation. The Riverpark project, a collaboration with CRTKL and Shenzhen University, addressed this head-on. Imagine, 50 square kilometers of river revitalization! This masterplan unfolded in four stages. First, the main river was activated, then the tributaries were brought back to life. Next, the riverbanks were expanded and greened. Finally, the urban green spaces were connected to the surrounding mountains. The Riverpark is more than just a park. It’s a vision of a climate-resistant city, divided into five themed areas. These areas celebrate folk culture, the green movement, ecological recreation, urban landscapes, and science and education. Each zone integrates new urban development that harmonizes with The Riverpark’s overall theme. The Riverpark has returned the river valley to the city’s core. It provides shade from the bustling city, fresh air, and recreational opportunities, enhancing the lives of over ten million people.
