The Repulse Bay is more than just a scenic bay. Its Chinese name Tsin Shui Wan means Shallow Water Bay. The origin of its English name remains a mystery. Many stories attempt to explain it.
One tale suggests that in 1841 pirates used the bay as a base. These pirates attacked merchant ships trading with China. The British Royal Navy intervened. They repulsed the pirates. This gave the bay its English name. However no official record confirms this.
Another story claims the HMS Repulse was stationed here. However no evidence supports this claim either. The HMS Repulse never visited Hong Kong. Despite the uncertainty the name Repulse Bay appeared on a British map in 1845. By the early 20th century it was in common usage.
In 1898 the Hong Kong Golf Club opened nearby. Roads were developed connecting the south and north. In the 1910s The Repulse Bay was developed into a recreational beach.
The Kadoorie family built The Repulse Bay Hotel in 1920. A bus route from Central to The Repulse Bay was established to attract swimmers. It is now one of Hong Kong’s oldest bus routes.
During World War II The Repulse Bay became a strategic location. The Japanese used The Repulse Bay Hotel as a military hospital. After the war the beach was artificially extended.
The Repulse Bay Hotel has hosted famous guests. Ernest Hemingway and his wife Martha Gellhorn stayed here. Actors William Holden and Jennifer Jones also visited. They acted in the film Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing.
The Repulse Bay Hotel was later demolished. A boutique shopping mall was built on part of the site. It mimics some of the old colonial architecture. The Pulse opened in 2016.
Today The Repulse Bay remains one of the most expensive residential areas. In 2018 twin townhouses sold for a record price. The richest man in Hong Kong Li Ka-shing lives nearby.
