Hidden within Riverdale lies The Pocket a unique neighbourhood. It’s tucked between the Greenwood TTC yard and CN train tracks. Think of it as a secret pocket a little village within a city.
The Pocket’s name wasn’t planned. Residents created it during a planning session. Susan McMurray an area newsletter editor helped coin the name. It stuck because of the area’s close-knit feel. It’s now used by residents and realtors alike.
The Pocket’s story begins around twenty years ago. Younger families and professionals started moving in. They were drawn to the affordable older homes many built before World War I. Yet some long-term residents remain. The Pocket’s charm keeps people rooted.
Access to The Pocket is primarily from Jones Avenue to the west. You can also enter from Danforth Avenue to the north or Greenwood Avenue to the east. Ravina Crescent is a main entry point winding south off Jones. Baird Shudell Hunter and Boultbee streets also provide access.
The Pocket Community Association worked with city officials. They put up green signs. The signs warn drivers of the neighbourhood’s limited through-traffic. Chatham Avenue offers access from Greenwood. Oakvale Avenue leads to a cul-de-sac.
The Pocket boasts a strong community spirit. Residents organize block parties street clean-ups and barbecues. Phin Park is the heart of The Pocket. It has mature trees a winter ice rink and a gazebo. Community events happen all year round including movie nights and a Victoria Day fireworks show.
The Pocket’s location is ideal. It’s a short walk from Danforth Avenue. There you find popular restaurants shops and cafes. Three subway stations are nearby Pape Donlands and Greenwood. Local schools include Wilkinson Public Blake Street Public Earl Grey Senior Public Riverdale Collegiate and Danforth Tech. Kapapamahchakwew-Wandering Spirit School also calls The Pocket home. It teaches Indigenous-based curriculum to students across Toronto. École élémentaire catholique du Bon-Berger a French Catholic school serves a wide area including The Pocket.
The Pocket is undergoing gentrification. Older homes are being renovated or replaced. Yet the close-knit feel and well-maintained gardens remain. This quiet enclave in a popular city remains a coveted place to live.
