Whispers of sea tales and shipwrecks echo around the Green Point Lighthouse. It stands proudly on Mouille Point, a beacon of hope for sailors navigating the treacherous waters of the South African coast. The Green Point Lighthouse isn’t just any lighthouse. It’s the oldest operational lighthouse in South Africa, first lit on April 12, 1824. Commissioned by Sir Rufane Shaw Donkin and designed by German architect Herman Schutte, the Green Point Lighthouse has witnessed centuries of maritime history. Initially, its Argand lamps, fueled by sperm whale oil, cast a beam visible for six nautical miles. Over time, upgrades extended its reach. In 1922, new lights pushed the beam to 22 nautical miles. Today, the lighthouse flashes white every 10 seconds, a reassuring rhythm for ships at sea. The Green Point Lighthouse has also seen its share of drama. In 1966, the S.A. Seafarer ran aground nearby during a fierce winter storm. The lighthouse beam focused on the wreck, aiding a dramatic helicopter rescue of all 75 people on board. Despite its location on Mouille Point, the name Green Point Lighthouse stuck. A common mistake among visitors. This lighthouse has also been called “Moaning Minnie” by locals. This nickname came about after a foghorn was installed in 1926. It blasted every 30 seconds, much to the annoyance of nearby residents. Eventually, a quieter electric horn replaced the “Moaning Minnie” in 1986. Today, the Green Point Lighthouse continues to guide ships and stands as a testament to South Africa’s rich maritime heritage.
