Here we are at The Heights School. It is a preparatory school for boys. The Heights School is located in Potomac Maryland.
The Heights School was founded in 1969. A group of Catholic laymen founded it. Many belonged to Opus Dei. Opus Dei means Work of God. At first, it was a middle school. It was located in Northwest Washington D.C. Author and parenting expert James Stenson was among the founders.
In 1978, The Heights purchased a campus in Potomac Maryland. The lower school started there. By 1983, the entire school united on the Potomac campus. The school includes grades three through twelve.
The mission of The Heights School is to assist parents. It helps with the intellectual, spiritual, and physical education of their sons. The Heights School offers a liberal arts curriculum. The subjects are English, mathematics, classics, history, and religion. Science, Spanish, art, computers, and music are also taught.
As of 2017–2018, the school had 538 students. There were 62.1 classroom teachers. The student-teacher ratio was 8.7 to 1.
Opus Dei supervises the school’s religious orientation. It also oversees spiritual formation. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington does not include The Heights in their list of Catholic schools. However, the Archdiocese of Washington reviews and approves the Catholic doctrine program. It also approves the curriculum.
The Heights School has many sports teams. There is cross country, golf, and soccer. Basketball, squash, and swimming are also offered. Wrestling, baseball, lacrosse, tennis, track and field, and rugby are available. The Heights School is known for its strong soccer teams. Freddy Adu a former national team and professional player attended The Heights. He was often recruited by top programs.
In 2018, The Heights varsity soccer team won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship. The team had an undefeated season. They were ranked #16 in the nation. The Washington Post ranked them #2. The Heights won another WCAC championship in 2023. The team finished 17-1-1. They allowed very few goals. The Washington Post ranked them #1 again.
The Heights also has a successful rock climbing team. The team competes in the Washington Area Interscholastic Climbing League. The league competes at indoor rock climbing gyms. They focus on bouldering and top rope. The Heights team was the top championship team in 2017/2018 and 2023/2024 seasons.
The Peter Vincent Galahad Blatty scholarship is given every four years. It honors William P. G. Blatty. He was the son of the author of The Exorcist. He was a member of the Class of 2005. He died of a heart condition.
The Heights School’s motto is “Crescite”. This means grow increase multiply. The school colors are red and white. Their slogan is “Men Fully Alive”. The school song is “To The Heights”. The mascot is the Cavalier. The team name is Cavaliers. The school newspaper is The Heights Herald.
The Heights School aims to develop well-rounded young men. It provides a strong academic and spiritual foundation. The school prepares students for college and for life.
