Picture this. You are standing before The Envoy Apartments. A grand building. It whispers stories of history and diplomacy. The Envoy Apartments a magnificent structure in the Meridian Hill neighborhood. Built between 1916 and 1918. It was considered the city’s finest apartment hotel. Architect A H Sonnemann designed this architectural gem. Its Italianate style is stunning. The lobby is breathtaking. Massive marble columns support elaborate molding. Imagine senators congressmen and diplomats calling this place home.

The Envoy Apartments holds a special place in history. It witnessed the birth of a nation. Tomá? Garrigue Masaryk the first president of Czechoslovakia lived here. He resided in The Envoy Apartments between July and November of 1918. The first Czechoslovakian flag flew from this very building. It was hoisted on October 18 1918. A symbol of a new nation’s hope.

Sadly some original features are gone. Roof pavilions and lamp standards were removed around 1963. But The Envoy Apartments persevered. Renovations in 1981 restored its grandeur. The building’s historical significance led to its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. A testament to its enduring legacy.

Today The Envoy Apartments stands tall. A reminder of its illustrious past. A beautiful blend of history and modern living. The Envoy Apartments. A piece of Washington DC history. A place where history and luxury meet.
