This wasn’t just any racetrack. The Downs at Santa Fe was a significant part of Santa Fe’s history a vibrant hub of excitement. Opened in June 1971 as Santa Fe Downs it drew a massive crowd of 11000 people. The $5.5 million mile-long oval track caused quite the traffic jam.
Despite initial success with great attendance and betting The Downs faced financial challenges. Rising interest rates in the mid-1970s led to bankruptcy in 1975. But The Downs didn’t stay down for long.
A year later local businessman Ken Newton led a group that purchased the track. The Downs at Santa Fe reopened its doors. From 1976 to 1984 The Downs saw a remarkable increase in daily betting. It had the largest percentage increase of any track in the nation.
Famous horses raced here including Real Quiet a Kentucky Derby winner. Even notable jockeys Garrett K Gomez and Mike Smith won their first races at this very track.
The Pojoaque Pueblo acquired The Downs in 1996. They invested $7 million in renovations. However heavy losses forced them to close it just a year later.
Today the property lives on. It’s a venue for concerts flea markets and even youth soccer games. The Downs at Santa Fe’s legacy continues to echo in the sounds of music and cheers of the crowd. It may not be horse racing anymore but the spirit of competition and community thrives. The Downs at Santa Fe a place where history gallops into the future.
