Whispers of history cling to Cadmans Cottage. Right here before you stands Sydney’s second-oldest surviving residential building. Built in 1816 this unassuming cottage boasts a rich past.

Cadmans Cottage wasn’t always a visitor attraction. It began as the Coxswain’s Barracks. Government coxswains and their crews lived here. They oversaw the harbour’s bustling activity. The water lapped close. High tides reportedly reached within 2.4 metres of its walls. Land reclamation changed that. The shoreline shifted by about 100 metres.

For years the cottage served as a vital hub. From 1845 to 1864 it became the Sydney Water Police headquarters. Then from 1865 to 1970 it transitioned into a Sailor’s Home. Imagine the stories its walls could tell. Tales of government officials busy coxswains and weary sailors.

John Cadman the longest-serving government coxswain lent his name to the cottage. He’d arrived in Australia as a convict. Yet he rose to a respected position. He lived here with his family. Their lives unfolded within these walls.

Restoration began in 1972. Archaeological digs unearthed fascinating clues. Evidence of the cottage’s evolution was carefully examined. The cottage now houses the Sydney Harbour National Parks Information Centre. Visitors can step back in time. They explore the rooms and imagine daily life in early Sydney.

Today Cadmans Cottage stands as a testament to Sydney’s past. It’s a tangible link to the city’s maritime history. It’s a reminder of the lives lived here. It’s a place where history whispers secrets to those who listen closely. It is a place that connects us to the spirit of early Sydney. The cottage invites you to step inside and explore its compelling past.
