The Church of the Blessed Trinity

In 1787, a seed of faith was planted in Georgetown. This seed would blossom into The Church of the Blessed Trinity, the oldest Catholic church in Washington D.C. The Church of the Blessed Trinity wasn’t always known by its current name. Initially, due to legal uncertainties surrounding Catholic churches, it was simply called “Georgetown Chapel”. The chapel served the burgeoning Catholic community of Georgetown and students from Georgetown College. The Church of the Blessed Trinity was founded by Archbishop John Carroll. He was America’s first Catholic bishop and a cousin of Charles Carroll, a Declaration of Independence signer. Four lay trustees, Adam King, George King, George Fenwick, and James Simpson, also played a crucial role in the church’s establishment. This original structure, facing south and boasting a bell tower, held its first mass in 1794. As the congregation grew, a new, larger church building was needed. In 1851, the present Church of the Blessed Trinity building was dedicated. This grander structure, facing west, replaced the original chapel. The original chapel, however, was not demolished. It was renamed the Chapel of St. Ignatius and continues to serve the parish. Even during times of national strife, The Church of the Blessed Trinity remained a steadfast presence. During the Civil War, it served as a hospital for over 200 wounded soldiers after the Second Battle of Bull Run. The church has also been a place of worship for prominent figures like President John F. Kennedy and his family, a fact commemorated by a plaque. Even today, figures like President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi have attended services at The Church of the Blessed Trinity. From its humble beginnings as Georgetown Chapel to its current grandeur, The Church of the Blessed Trinity stands as a testament to enduring faith. It has witnessed the growth of the nation’s capital and served as a spiritual anchor for generations.
