The Severn Run Evangelical Presbyterian Church needed a way to connect with the community. So they picked up the phone. Almost 20000 calls were made. The goal? To see if anyone wanted a new church. The response was incredible. People were eager for a place of worship. On March 3 1991 The Church at Severn Run held its first service. Around 200 people attended. Some are still members today. This humble beginning speaks volumes about the church’s enduring spirit.
The Church at Severn Run wasn’t always in its current home. It began as a mission church. It moved to different temporary locations. Finally in February 2000 The Church at Severn Run found its permanent home. This was a significant milestone. Years of hard work and sacrifice paid off. The congregation and supportive neighboring churches made it possible. The Church at Severn Run stands as a testament to perseverance and faith.
Pastor Arch Van Devender served as the first official pastor. He was ordained on the church’s fourth anniversary. Many years later in 2016 Pastor Arch retired. Jesse Crutchley took over as pastor. Jesse had already served as Pastoral Intern and Director of Family Ministries for seven years. He knew the church well. He understands its mission. He embraces the legacy of service and community.
The Church at Severn Run’s motto is “Rest Yourselves Under the Tree”. This refers to the biblical story of Abraham’s hospitality. Abraham welcomed strangers.
