Consider the Sisters of St Paul of Chartres arriving in Hong Kong after a turbulent sea voyage from France. This chapel we’re approaching, Christ the King Chapel, has a history intertwined with their journey. Let me tell you about it.

Christ the King Chapel is part of the St Paul’s compound in Causeway Bay. The compound also houses a convent and a hospital. Its story began in 1848. Four Sisters of St Paul of Chartres made a long journey from France. They arrived in Hong Kong and established an orphanage. They also established a small hospital in Wan Chai.

In 1915, they moved to an old factory building in Causeway Bay. This expansion catered to the elderly and sick in addition to children. The foundation stone for the chapel was laid in 1928. Two years later, in 1930, the chapel was blessed. It was dedicated as a private sanctuary for the Sisters.

Initially, the chapel was a sanctuary for the Sisters. In 1961, the chapel began holding Sunday mass for children. Now, any churchgoers can attend Sunday mass at Christ the King Chapel. The chapel can hold up to 1,000 people at a time.

Imagine the voices of children singing hymns within those walls. Cathy Lam studied at St Paul’s Secondary School. She remembers attending mass at St Paul’s Church. She and her schoolmates sang hymns. They recited the Bible and listened to sermons. The Christ the King Chapel has touched the lives of many.

Causeway Bay embodies the fast pace of Hong Kong. It shows fascinating contrasts and dynamic energy. From Hong Kong’s beginning to today, its diversity makes it a beloved area. Christ the King Chapel stands as a testament to this. It is a place of peace and reflection amidst the city’s hustle.

The chapel is located at 33 Caroline Hill Road. It stands as a reminder of faith. It recalls the dedication of the Sisters of St Paul of Chartres. Their legacy of care continues here. It serves the community in Causeway Bay.

Today, Christ the King Chapel welcomes all. It offers a space for worship and reflection. It reminds us of its humble beginnings. It started as a private sanctuary. Now, it stands as a beacon of faith for all who seek solace. Remember the story of the Sisters. Remember their long journey and their commitment to serving others. This is the legacy of Christ the King Chapel.
