Pietro Nobile a Neoclassical architect won. His vision was one of grandeur. However the construction was slow. It wasn’t until 1849 that the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua was finally consecrated.
The facade of the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua is breathtaking. Six Ionic columns support an imperial-looking portico. Atop the portico six statues stand proudly. They depict the patron saints of Trieste. Francesco Bosa a talented sculptor created these figures in 1842. The rear facade boasts twin bell towers adding to the church’s imposing presence.
Inside the Chapel of Saint Anthony of Padua the enormous interior is equally impressive. Barrel arches and vaults create a sense of awe. In the apse a stunning fresco of Jesus Entering Jerusalem by Sebastiano Santi commands attention. Six lateral niches house exquisite altarpieces. They showcase religious works by master artists like Michelangelo Grigoletti Felice Schiavoni Odorico Politi Ludovico Lipparini and Joseph Ernest Tunner. Their paintings depict various religious scenes adding beauty and spiritual depth to the space.
