How about stepping into a realm of architectural grandeur? I am talking about The Center. It is located in the heart of Shenzhen.
The Center stands as a testament to modern architectural prowess. It reaches a height of 375.5 metres. This translates to 1232 ft. The Center began construction in 2012. It was completed in 2021.
The Center isn’t just about height. Its fluid outline and sinuous curves catch the eye. Its rich materiality speaks volumes of China’s urban visage.
Inside The Center you will find offices. There are 110000 square meters of office space. There are also 20000 square meters of amenities. These include clubhouse-style facilities and high-end apartments.
But The Center is more than just a single tower. It includes a shorter tower known as One Palace. This provides additional apartments and penthouses. These overlook an extensive garden. The garden sits on the roof of the building’s shared podium.
The Center includes One Avenue. This retail mall features anchor shops and boutique retail. There are also experience-based entertainment facilities. Terraced restaurants add to the appeal. The intention is to form the civic and cultural center of the Gangxia development.
Connectivity is key in The Center design. The podium basements link the residential and office towers. They connect to nearby subway stations. These stations also link to the public square. The podium’s exterior lighting wraps around in a ribbon of illuminated panels. This references the landmark tower’s crown.
The Center has achieved LEED Gold certification. Its design draws inspiration from the surrounding culture and geography. The fluid design takes cues from nature. The four overlapping façade screens mirror the city’s official flower. It is the bougainvillea. These screens subtly veil large-scale spaces. These spaces include sky gardens at the pinnacle. The gently tapering form maximizes interior floorplates. It creates a dramatic profile too.
Interestingly Shenzhen is China’s sixth-largest city. It surpasses Chengdu and Nanjing. It is one of the fastest-growing cities globally. Shenzhen’s population is around 12.6 million. Shenzhen is unique. All its residents live within the urban area.
Shenzhen is part of the Pearl River Delta. It is China’s largest metropolitan area. Only Guangzhou is larger in the delta. Shenzhen is also China’s youngest metropolis.
In 1980 Shenzhen was a small town. It had about 30000 residents. That year it became China’s first Special Economic Zone. This spurred massive investments. Shenzhen transformed into a major financial center and technology hub.
The Center stands tall. It symbolizes Shenzhen’s transformation. It reflects the city’s architectural ambition. The Center embodies Shenzhen’s spirit. It is modern, forward-thinking, and deeply rooted in its cultural context.
