Here, perched in Strasbourg, stands The Cat Sculpture. This isn’t just any cat. It’s a memorial to Fèlicette, the first and only cat to journey into space and return alive.

In 1963, Fèlicette, a Parisian stray, was chosen for a momentous mission. She was to demonstrate how medium-sized mammals coped in a weightless environment. Selected from a pool of feline astronaut candidates, Fèlicette underwent intense training. This included enduring compression chambers, small containers, and a centrifuge.

Launched from Algeria in a Véronique rocket, Fèlicette bravely soared about 100 miles above Earth. For about 15 minutes, she experienced suborbital space. Fèlicette returned to Earth safe and sound. Sadly, two months later, she died. Scientists removed electrodes from her brain to study the neurological effects of space travel.

While other space animals like Laika the dog have prominent memorials, Fèlicette’s story faded. Creative director Matthew Serge Guy noticed this oversight. He launched a Kickstarter campaign in 2017 to honor Fèlicette with a memorial. The campaign raised nearly $57,000.

The result is this bronze statue at the International Space University in Strasbourg. Unveiled in December 2019, the 5-foot-tall statue depicts Fèlicette sitting on a globe, gazing skyward. She is forever immortalized.

The memorial shares Pioneer’s Hall with a bust of Yuri Gagarin. This juxtaposition highlights Fèlicette’s important contribution to space exploration. This is often overlooked.

The Cat Sculpture serves as a reminder of Fèlicette’s pioneering spirit. It also acknowledges the sacrifices made in the name of science. Her story, once obscure, now has a tangible tribute.

Fèlicette’s journey may have been brief. Some accounts say that she was purchased from a pet store. Other accounts say she was chosen from among the cats slinking through the streets of Paris. But her legacy endures. She inspires us to reach for the stars.

So, as you admire The Cat Sculpture, remember Fèlicette. She was a small cat who made a giant leap for feline-kind. Let her story ignite your own curiosity about the cosmos. The statue reminds us that even the smallest among us can achieve extraordinary things.
