“Prepare to be amazed by a garden where exotic blooms meet native bushland.” That’s what I always say to newcomers at The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens. The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens are a unique treasure. This 18.3-hectare garden combines exotic rhododendrons with native Australian bushland. It is a truly special sight.

The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens were created in 1970. They sit 1065 metres above sea level. This elevation creates the perfect climate. Rhododendrons and other exotic plants thrive here among the natural bush. Traveller Magazine even named The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens an Australian National Treasure in 2011.

The best time to visit The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens is from late September to mid-November. During these months, the blossoms are magnificent. You’ll see colours ranging from pinks to yellows to purples. April is also a great time to visit. The autumn colours are simply glorious. Even later in the year, the bare branches create sculptural patterns against the native shrubs.

Take a stroll along the easy walking tracks. There are many different walking tracks to choose from. Some are short and some are long. The Griffiths Walk is only 75m. The Engelbert Nature Trail is 650m. The gardens are open every day of the year. Dogs are allowed on leads.

Don’t miss the McCullough Bridge. It is probably the most photographed feature in the valley. Bob McCullough built it in 1974. The lush surroundings make it a popular spot for wedding photos.

There is also the Pryor Bridge. It sits upstream from the McCullough Bridge. This timber construction was built in memory of John Pryor. He was the town clerk who helped develop The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens early on.

If you have mobility problems, don’t worry. There is an accessible lookout near the Lodge. It offers stunning views of the gardens. You can see down to the valley, the lake, and across to the rhododendron banks.

The Lodge Rhodo Tea Room is open for six weeks during the peak season. This is usually October and November. Here, you can enjoy the best Aussie Cream Teas in the Blue Mountains. You can also buy unique Rhodo souvenirs.

The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens also boasts the Dr A.L. North Conifer Garden. It is a one-hectare parcel of land. It stretches along the fence line on Bacchante Street.

Maple Crescent is a must-see in autumn. The walk is a wonderland of yellowed and russet leaves. The deciduous trees look spectacular against the green bushland.

Jim’s Pond is another highlight. It is part of a chain of ponds that feed from the lake. A small fountain keeps the water aerated. This creates a perfect home for frogs.

The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens are managed by volunteers. They rely on your generosity to maintain these gardens. So, a gold coin donation at the car park is much appreciated. Enjoy the tranquility and beauty of The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens.
