The name “The Bridle Path” comes from early plans. These plans included an elaborate system of equestrian bridle paths. Many estate owners in the area were horse-owners. The paths have since been paved over. The name remains a nod to the area’s history.
Before mansions dotted the landscape, The Bridle Path was farmland. That changed in 1929. The Bayview Bridge spanned the Don River Valley opening the area for residential development. Developer Forsey Page had a vision. He wanted an “exclusive enclave of estate homes”. He built the first house at 2 The Bridle Path. This Cape Cod Colonial home sparked the neighborhood’s transformation.
In 1937, E.P. Taylor bought a large plot of land north of The Bridle Path. Taylor designed the Don Mills community. His estate became known as Windfields. Today, the Canadian Film Centre occupies it. The park behind it? Windfields Park.
George Montegu Black Jr., Taylor’s business partner moved here in the late 1940s. He built a large mansion on Park Lane Circle. Black wanted to control who his neighbors would be. He took over the company owning the farmland. He set restrictions through zoning laws. Only single-family homes could be built. Lots had to be at least two acres. The area was divided into about 50 lots. Each sold for $25000. The Bridle Path began to take shape.
The Bridle Path has been home to many prominent figures. Business people, celebrities, doctors, and engineers have lived here. Media mogul Moses Znaimer once called it home.
