Hidden amidst the pines of Pok Fu Lam, The Bethanie whispers tales of healing and history. Did the scent of pine and sea air ever truly mask the suffering within these walls? The Bethanie began as a sanctuary, a sanatorium built in 1875 by the French Society of Foreign Missions. It offered respite for missionaries weary from their travels and ailing from tropical diseases. The Bethanie, with its neo-Gothic architecture, stood as a beacon of hope in a challenging land. Imagine those early days. The gentle rustle of leaves overhead, the distant crash of waves against the shore, and the murmur of prayers within the chapel. The Bethanie wasn’t just a place for physical healing. It was also a center for spiritual and intellectual pursuits. A printing press, established on the grounds, churned out religious texts in 28 different languages. This quiet haven also housed an intriguing internal debate. Should nuns from the French Convent of St. Paul de Chartres be invited to assist in patient care? The debate raged for five years before being decided against. The focus remained on expansion, not shared management. The Bethanie’s tranquility was shattered in 1941. Japanese troops stormed the grounds, ransacking the building and imprisoning the missionaries. Even the towering coniferous trees, planted decades earlier, were felled for fuel. The Bethanie endured. After the war, the missionaries returned, rebuilding their sanctuary and resuming their mission. The Bethanie saw another surge of activity after the 1949 Communist Revolution. It became a refuge once more, operating well beyond its capacity. But the political climate eventually forced its closure in 1974. The Bethanie faced demolition, its fate uncertain. Then, a group of University of Hong Kong students occupied the building. This act of defiance sparked a renewed appreciation for The Bethanie’s historical significance. It was saved from destruction and designated a Grade II historic building in 1981. The Bethanie, once a place of healing, now nurtures creative minds. Restored and renovated, it is home to the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts’ School of Film and Television. As you stand before The Bethanie, consider the countless lives touched within these walls. From missionaries seeking respite to students honing their craft, The Bethanie continues to inspire. It stands as a testament to resilience, a monument to history, and a vibrant center for the arts.
