Wondering about Eugene V. Thaw? He was one of the most influential art collectors. He was also a scholar and dealer of the 20th century. Here at the Thaw Art History Center, we celebrate his passion.

Eugene Thaw’s journey began in Manhattan in 1927. He studied art history at Columbia University. At just 23, he opened his gallery, E.V. Thaw & Co. It was located above the Oak Room of the Algonquin Hotel.

Thaw’s gallery became known for its diverse collection. It included everything from Toulouse-Lautrec prints to Rembrandt etchings. You could find ancient bronzes and Native American art too. He even hosted Joan Mitchell’s first solo show.

Museum directors sought Thaw’s expertise. The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art benefited from his eye. He also helped the National Gallery of Art and others.

Thaw enriched these institutions. He made more works available to the public. He gifted over 400 drawings to the Morgan Library. These included works by Rembrandt and Picasso.

His passion extended to Native American art. In 1987, he and his wife Clare began acquiring indigenous art in Santa Fe. They viewed it as fine art. They applied the same standards they used for other pieces.

The Thaws amassed over 870 pieces. In 1991, they donated their collection to the Fenimore Art Museum. It became a dynamic study of Native American art.

Thaw’s collection was diverse. It included old masters, American Indian art and Eurasian bronzes. You could find medieval jewelry, architectural models and oil sketches. French faience, paintings, sculptures and furniture were also included.

Artists in his collection ranged from Rembrandt to Matisse. Highlights were shown at the Morgan Library. The exhibition was called Drawn to Greatness. It featured master drawings from the Thaw Collection.

Thaw served on the boards of various museums. These included the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and the Fenimore Art Museum. He gave art to these institutions and others.

With his wife, Clare, Thaw founded the Eugene Victor Thaw Art Foundation in 1981. It supported the arts, environmental causes and animal rights. After Thaw died in 2018, Christie’s auctioned over 200 works from his estate. The proceeds went to his charitable trust.

The Thaw Art History Center stands as a testament. It shows his dedication to art. His legacy continues to inspire. It inspires scholars, collectors and art lovers alike.
