Founded in 1950 Thankful Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Its journey began with just two members under the leadership of Reverend Chester Smallwood. They quickly found a home at 1361 Florida Avenue NE. Reverend Smallwood’s legacy continued with Reverend Johnnie H Crowder installed as the first official pastor in 1951. The church moved several times eventually settling at its current location 1401 Independence Avenue SE in 1973. This move marked a significant milestone. The church paid off its mortgage in 1996 a true symbol of their dedicated congregation.

Since then Thankful Baptist Church has seen seven more pastors each contributing to its growth and spirit. The passing of Reverend Norman King in 2015 was mourned by the congregation. His final words were a powerful testament I have fought a good fight I have finished my course I have kept the faith. The church welcomed its eighth pastor Robert H Alston Jr in 2018. His dynamic leadership brought a surge of new members. He spearheaded improvement projects around the church. In 2023 he was elevated to Bishop-Elect Robert H Alston Jr a testament to his dedication.
