Hidden amidst the Vienna Woods, the Teufelsteinhütte whispers tales of devils, daring climbs, and the echoes of a bustling quarry. The Teufelsteinhütte, perched at 547 meters above sea level, offers a respite for weary hikers, a warm welcome after a trek through whispering trees and along winding paths. The Teufelsteinhütte is more than just a mountain hut. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Austrian Alpine Club, specifically the Teufelstein-Perchtoldsdorf section, who lovingly maintain it. Open from mid-March to the end of June, and then again from the end of August to the beginning of December, it offers a seasonal haven. The hut itself is manned on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays by dedicated volunteers. The name “Teufelstein,” or Devil’s Stone, arises from a fascinating legend intertwined with the very rocks upon which this area rests. Legend has it that God, admiring the panoramic view, declared it “Herrgottstuhl,” or God’s Chair. Enraged, the devil attempted to obliterate this divine vista by hurling a mountain to block the view. This dramatic ridge, now known as the “Höllenstein-Zug” or Hellstone Train, bears the supposed imprints of the devil’s hands. Not content, the devil further shattered the Herrgottstuhl into two distinct rock formations, now known as the Teufelstein rocks. These very rocks, scarred by the devil’s fury, are a popular training ground for rock climbers. They stand as a reminder of the dramatic forces that shaped this landscape. The Teufelsteinhütte is nestled near the peak of Teufelstein mountain, within the protected Teufelstein-Fischerwiese nature reserve. This reserve, significantly expanded in 2016 to encompass the former Fischerwiese quarry and its tranquil lake, protects a rich ecosystem of flora and fauna. This quarry, active from 1905 until around 1980, once provided limestone for the Lafarge Perlmooser cement plant in Vienna-Rodaun, a significant industrial landmark of its time. The now-flooded quarry stands as a silent testament to the area’s industrial past, its waters mirroring the surrounding forest and sky. The Teufelsteinhütte, with its simple charm and captivating views, bridges this industrial heritage with the natural beauty of the Vienna Woods.
