But its story begins long before its official opening. The land beneath this terminal was once a bullock paddock. Flights first took off from these fields around 1911.
Fast forward to the 1960s. The need for a modern international terminal became clear. Construction started in late 1966. Paynter and Dixon Industries designed much of the new terminal. Costain was appointed lead contractor.
The first Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet arrived on October 4 1970. It was Pan Am’s Clipper Flying Cloud. This marked a new era for Sydney Airport’s Terminal 1 International.
Since its completion Terminal 1 has undergone several expansions. In 1992 Pier C was constructed. This added nine new gates. Between 1997 and 2000 ten new aircraft parking positions were added. A new integrated baggage handling system was installed too.
A third redevelopment worth A$500 million finished in 2010. The shopping complex expanded. Outbound customs operations centralized. The terminal’s floor space increased significantly. Further renovations completed in 2016.
Today Terminal 1 boasts 25 gates with aerobridges. Thirteen are in Pier B. Twelve are in Pier C. These piers accommodate various airlines and alliances.
Inside Terminal 1 is split into three levels. There is one each for arrivals departures and airline offices. The departure level alone has 200 check-in desks.
Need some relaxation before your flight? Terminal 1 hosts eight airline lounges. These include lounges for Qantas Air New Zealand and Emirates.
