Picture this a vibrant city nestled beside Tampa’s bustling heart. This is Temple Terrace a place where history whispers among the live oaks.

Incorporated in 1925 Temple Terrace boasts a rich past. It began as a grand vision a Mediterranean-Revival golf course community. This was unusual for its time. It was one of the first of its kind in the United States.

The name itself holds a fascinating story. Temple Terrace was named for the Temple orange a hybrid citrus fruit. This unique orange a cross between a tangerine and a sweet orange was first grown here in abundance. The “terrace” refers to the area’s sloping land near the Hillsborough River.

Long before the city was established Native Americans known as the Tocobaga inhabited this land. Spanish explorers arrived in 1757 leaving their mark. Don Francisco Maria Celi journeyed up the Hillsborough River searching for pine trees. He named the area “El Pinal de la Cruz de Santa Teresa”.

Later the area became a vast game preserve owned by Bertha Palmer a Chicago socialite. She dreamed of creating a luxurious golf community. Sadly she died before realizing her vision. However her legacy lives on in the stunning Woodmont Clubhouse the only original building from her preserve.

After her death developers bought the land and built Temple Terrace. Wealthy Northerners were the target buyers. The plan was for them to build villas and purchase citrus groves. This plan was interrupted by the Great Depression.

The area flourished after World War II with new homes in mid-century modern style. The Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club hosted prestigious events like the Florida Open. Famous golfers competed except for Bobby Jones.

The city’s rebirth truly began in the 1980s. New developments and annexations tripled the tax base. Today Temple Terrace is a thriving community. It continues to grow while keeping its unique charm.

Now look around you. See the beautiful homes? Many are designed in the Mediterranean Revival style. This reflects the original plan of the city. Some are designed by well-known architects M Leo Elliott and Dwight James Baum. Their work contributes to Temple Terrace’s distinctive character.

Temple Terrace is more than just a beautiful place. It’s a living testament to vision perseverance and the enduring spirit of community. It is a place where the past and present blend creating a truly special place.
