Across the road stands Temple Israel, a beacon of Progressive Judaism in Cape Town. Temple Israel isn’t just one building. It represents a community spread across three locations: Green Point, Wynberg, and Milnerton. Temple Israel is the largest Progressive Jewish congregation in South Africa and the second largest Jewish congregation in Cape Town after Marais Road Shul. This vibrant community began its journey in Green Point in 1944, eight years after South Africa’s first progressive synagogue opened in Johannesburg. The founders, Rabbi Dr. David Sherman and his wife Bertha, nurtured the congregation. It grew to represent around 18% of Cape Town’s Jewish population. Interestingly, Temple Israel in Cape Town embraced Confirmation for 16-year-olds, requiring study and leading a service. This practice, despite initial resistance in Johannesburg, became a tradition under Rabbi Sherman’s leadership. Temple Israel’s history also reveals a struggle for autonomy. In the mid-20th century, it rejected the idea of a Chief Minister based in Johannesburg. They wanted each city to have its own decision-making power, a principle reflecting the democratic ideals of Reform Judaism. The congregation even left the South African Union for Progressive Judaism for a period, returning only in 1963. Temple Israel faced opposition from Orthodox leaders. However, it also saw periods of collaboration, particularly with Rabbi David Rosen of Marais Road Shul. They co-hosted events and worked together on social projects. Rabbi Sherman, a leader at Temple Israel, took a courageous stand against apartheid. He spoke at protest meetings and transformed part of Temple Israel into a center for African culture and poverty alleviation projects. Today, Temple Israel continues its legacy of inclusion and progress. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they live-streamed services, reaching a wider audience than ever before. Within Temple Israel’s walls, you’ll find the Czech Memorial Scroll 128. This Torah scroll is a survivor, rescued from Czechoslovakia during the Nazi invasion. It’s a poignant reminder of resilience and the enduring power of faith.
