High above Prague’s cityscape the Žižkov Television Tower stands. A unique structure it is. Its three slender pillars rise towards the sky. They hold aloft nine pods and three decks. These are filled with broadcasting equipment.

This architectural marvel wasn’t always loved. Built between 1985 and 1992 it caused controversy. Its construction involved disturbing an old Jewish cemetery. The tower’s unconventional design also drew criticism. Some called it megalomaniacal. It was even nicknamed “Jakeš’s finger” after a Communist Party official.

But the Žižkov Television Tower is more than just a transmitter. Its height is 216 meters. An observatory is at 93 meters. A hotel room offers breathtaking views from 70 meters. There are restaurants at 66 meters. Three elevators whisk visitors up at 4 m/s.

Six of the pods are open to the public. They offer stunning panoramic views of Prague. The lower pods house a restaurant and cafe. The tower also serves as a meteorological observatory. It’s a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.

In 2000 ten fiberglass sculptures were added. They are called “Miminka” or Babies. They crawl up and down the tower’s pillars. These sculptures proved popular. They were made permanent in 2001. However they were removed in 2017 for cleaning and checks. Identical duplicates were installed in 2019.

Today the Žižkov Television Tower is a popular attraction. It has become a symbol of Prague. Its unique design and stunning views draw visitors from around the world. It is a testament to both innovative engineering and a city’s ability to embrace its history. Even its controversial past. The Žižkov Television Tower is a must-see. It shows Prague’s blend of the old and new.
