Did you know the Technische Hochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt THWS boasts a history stretching back to 1807? That’s right. This impressive institution wasn’t built overnight. It’s the culmination of three earlier institutions. The Balthasar-Neumann Polytechnic the Würzburg Commercial College and the Würzburg School of Applied Arts. They all played a part in shaping what THWS is today.
Imagine the hustle and bustle of its early days. In 1971 the Bavarian Technical University Law breathed new life into these legacy schools. The Technische Hochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt officially opened its doors. 1566 students were eager to learn. They filled classrooms in Würzburg and Schweinfurt. Courses in architecture civil engineering and business administration were offered in Würzburg. Schweinfurt welcomed students of electrical mechanical and industrial engineering.
Over the years THWS expanded its course offerings. New subjects appeared like magic. Social work plastics engineering and computer science were added. Later came nursing management business economics business informatics and media management. The university continued to grow adding computational engineering logistics and even robotics.
The growth wasn’t limited to curriculum. The university also expanded its physical presence. A new campus in Aschaffenburg opened between 1991 and 2000. It eventually became the independent University of Applied Sciences Aschaffenburg. In 2003 a stunning circular teaching building opened in Schweinfurt. It cost nearly 14.5 million euros. This modern facility included state of the art computer labs a spacious assembly hall and air conditioned multimedia rooms.
Further growth followed. New buildings were acquired in both Würzburg and Schweinfurt in 2011. The university’s influence extended. It launched English language TWIN programs in 2015. In 2021 a new building for the Faculty of Business and Engineering was completed.
The year 2023 marked a significant milestone. The Technische Hochschule Würzburg-Schweinfurt achieved technical university status. A well deserved honor considering its impressive growth and standing. Its name officially changed reflecting this prestigious upgrade. The THWS is now firmly established as a leading technical university. It has over 50 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs. The subjects range from STEM fields to visual design social sciences languages and business administration.
