The roar of the crowd still echoes in my ears. The Teatro Renault stands before us a majestic testament to São Paulo’s vibrant cultural history.

Built in 1927 this architectural marvel initially opened its doors as the Teatro Paramount. Imagine the glamour. It was the first sound cinema in Latin America. The opening night in April 1929 featured the film The Patriot. A symphony orchestra played. Sebastião Sampaio the Brazilian Consul General in New York gave a speech. This event was the first sound broadcast in Latin America.

Throughout the 1930s and 40s the Teatro Renault gained renown as a concert hall. It hosted São Paulo’s grand Carnival balls in the 1950s. In the 1960s it was sold to Record. The iconic program O Fino da Bossa was broadcast from here. Elis Regina and Jair Rodrigues were featured performers. The III Festival de Música Popular Brasileira also took place here in 1967. Edu Lobo Caetano Veloso Chico Buarque and Gilberto Gil were among the participants.

Tragedy struck in 1969. A fire partially destroyed the beloved theater. Only the original foyer and facade survived. The theater was rebuilt into a multi-screen cinema. It closed its doors in 1996.

Then came a remarkable restoration. In 2001 the Teatro Renault reopened as the Teatro Abril. The stage the audience and support facilities were completely rebuilt. Les Misérables was the inaugural show. In 2012 a naming rights agreement was signed with Renault. The theater was renamed Teatro Renault. The Lion King premiered in March 2013.

The Teatro Renault stands today a symbol of resilience and dedication to the arts. This magnificent venue continues to enrich São Paulo’s cultural landscape.
