Was Teatro di Torino always so modern? I see raised eyebrows. Many assume this striking structure is a recent addition to Turin’s cityscape. The current Teatro di Torino, with its bold, curved lines and innovative design, is indeed a relatively recent creation. It opened in 1973, a brainchild of architect Carlo Mollino. This building rose from the ashes of its predecessor. The original Teatro Regio, a grand “all’italiana” theatre dating back to 1740, was tragically destroyed by a fire in 1936. Imagine the loss. Almost two centuries of artistic heritage, gone in a single night. The Teatro Regio, however, did not disappear. It lived on, its performances continuing in other venues across the city, waiting for its rebirth. Mollino’s Teatro di Torino is a testament to both loss and renewal. The architect dared to contrast the new with the monumental, incorporating elements of the old Regio’s history into his design. Notice the side walls. They feature a stellar brickwork design, echoing the decorative geometries of Palazzo Carignano. Step inside. The foyer is an airy spectacle of interconnecting staircases and walkways, almost floating in space. The shell-shaped roof, a marvel of engineering by Felice Bertone, crowns the structure. Inside the auditorium, the changes are dramatic. The proscenium, radically transformed, and new paneling create optimal acoustics. Even the gate before the entrance, designed by Umberto Mastroianni, is a work of art. Mollino poured his heart into this building, designing every detail, from the doorknobs to the grand chandelier. Sadly, he passed away just months after its completion, unable to fully witness the impact of his creation. The Teatro di Torino is more than just a building. It is a symbol of Turin’s resilience. It carries the echoes of past grandeur while embracing the future of the performing arts.
