Rising above the rooftops, the TBZ-Turm stands as a striking red beacon. It’s a modern twist on a historical design. This wooden tower, perched atop Zurich’s Technical Vocational School, offers a unique perspective. The TBZ-Turm was the brainchild of German artist Daniel Roth. He won a competition in 2003 to design a structure that would provide a panoramic view. The design is a nod to Vladimir Shukhov’s hyperboloid structures from the late 19th century. The TBZ-Turm blends this historical inspiration with contemporary architecture. It was completed in 2005, standing 13 meters tall. A platform at 9.6 meters offers breathtaking views of the city. While the tower isn’t always open to the public, its unique design makes it a recognizable landmark. The vibrant red wood against the backdrop of the cityscape is a sight to behold. For a time, students could access the tower. Unfortunately, due to some rule-breaking, access became restricted. However, with a student ID, one can still borrow the key from the school library. Imagine climbing the spiral staircase, ascending towards the sky. From the glass-enclosed platform, the city sprawls out before you. It’s a blend of old and new, much like the TBZ-Turm itself. This hidden gem offers a unique glimpse into Zurich’s architectural landscape. The TBZ-Turm is more than just a viewing platform. It’s a symbol of innovation and a bridge between the past and the present.
