You wouldn’t believe it, but this rugby club, Tawa R.F.C, was born in 1947. The Tawa Rugby Football Club began as a grassroots affair. It was the product of a small group of young men dedicated to the game. These guys worked hard during the week, but they dedicated their weekends to rugby. Tawa R.F.C continues to carry their torch and upholds the club’s values with pride and honour. The club has come a long way from the late 1940’s and 50’s when they used a gravel patch outside the Tawa Fire Station for practice. When the weather wasn’t cooperating, they even borrowed the gymnasium of the Johnsonville Rugby Club. It is a relationship that has produced both fierce competition on the field and the greatest of friendships off the field. Today, Tawa R.F.C boasts top-notch facilities at Lyndhurst Park. From awesome club rooms to a floodlit ground, it’s all top-tier. They even have an all-weather training area, so there are no excuses for missing practice! Tawa has a legacy of producing top players. Graham Mexted and Vince Bevan, two All Blacks, played for the team back in 1950. The club has produced a long list of Wellington representatives and All Blacks, such as Murray Mexted, Steve McDowell, Dion Waller, Brad Fleming, and Shane Carter. The club is open to players of all ages and skill levels. They have strong teams in Premier, Senior First, Colts, and even an 80/80 grade team. They boast a women’s rugby team and even two Netball teams that play in the Kapi Mana Netball competition. They offer a fun and inclusive experience for every skill level.
