Ever wondered what makes Tate’s Cairn Highway more than just a road? It’s a vital artery. It links Tate’s Cairn Tunnel and Ma Liu Shui Interchange. This connection forms part of Route 2.

Opened on 26 June 1991, Tate’s Cairn Highway is a dual 3-lane expressway. The highway is named after Tate’s Cairn. From the Ma Liu Shui Interchange, where it meets Route 9, the highway crosses the Shing Mun River’s estuary. It then heads south.

Here, at Shek Mun, the highway meets Tai Chung Kiu Road. This road distributes traffic. Continuing, the highway arrives at Siu Lek Yuen. At this point, the highway splits. One branch leads to Tate’s Cairn Tunnel. The other goes to Sha Lek Highway. Sha Lek Highway eventually joins Route 1 at Sha Tin Road.

Tate’s Cairn Highway lies entirely within Sha Tin District. You see, plans are underway to widen the T6 Bridge. The T6 Bridge of Tate’s Cairn Highway crosses the Shing Mun River Channel. It also passes Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works. The goal is to expand it from a dual two-lane to a dual three-lane carriageway. The project is still under study.

Beyond its physical presence, the area around Tate’s Cairn is vital for meteorological observations. The Hong Kong Observatory operates a network of weather radars. One radar sits atop Tate’s Cairn. It is about 588 meters above sea level. It is around 30 km east of Hong Kong International Airport.

This S-band radar detects weather patterns up to 512 km away. It helps monitor microbursts and windshear. These are dangerous for aircraft. In April 2024, this equipment played a crucial role. It helped analyze microburst encounters affecting flights.

Aircraft landing at Hong Kong International Airport faced severe turbulence. The radar at Tate’s Cairn provided key data. It showed wind speeds and atmospheric motion. This helped pilots avoid dangerous conditions. The data from Tate’s Cairn radar was compared with aircraft data. This comparison confirmed the radar’s accuracy. It also improved wind field estimation methods.

Tate’s Cairn Highway is more than just a road. It’s a testament to Hong Kong’s infrastructure. It highlights the city’s commitment to safety. It’s a place where transportation meets cutting-edge weather monitoring.
