From a former church a mosque arose. Welcome to the Taronga Road Mosque. This isn’t just any mosque. It’s a story of transformation and community. Originally a church complex acquired around 1999 or 2000 it became a vibrant center of Islamic life.
The Taronga Road Mosque or Masjied Ghiedmatiel Islamia as it is formally known stands on 4500 square meters. It’s more than just a place of worship. It’s a hub for spiritual activities. Five daily prayers are held here. Friday congregational prayers Jumu’ah are a highlight. The special Tarawih prayers during Ramadan fill the mosque with devotion. Separate washing and ablution facilities cater to both men and women.
But the Taronga Road Mosque’s story began much earlier. In 1990 a survey showed a need for a Muslim community center in this area. On February 7 1991 the Rondebosch East Islamic Society REIS was formed. Finding a suitable location was a challenge. They explored purchasing vacant land and even tried to acquire underutilized churches.
Finally in 1996 REIS purchased a property including an adjacent house. The purchase of the Jubilee Community Church complex in 1999 proved a more practical solution than developing the vacant plot. This larger facility better met the growing community’s needs. Ample parking solved a previous problem.
The transformation of the church into a mosque was a significant undertaking. Fundraising efforts supported the extensive renovations. Today the mosque boasts a well-utilized community hall. Madressa classes educate the youth. The mosque also serves as a popular wedding venue. Its community hall frequently hosts wedding receptions. This multifaceted space reflects the mosque’s role as a central point for social and religious gatherings. The mosque even hosts fitness classes showing its commitment to the community’s well-being.
Shaykh Abdurragmaan Khan is the current Imam. The Taronga Road Mosque isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the faith dedication and community spirit of the Rondebosch East Muslims. It’s a place where the past gives way to a vibrant present. A symbol of growth and transformation. It’s a place where community thrives.
