Once a quiet fishing village Taren Point now thrives. It sits on a peninsula. The Georges River flows nearby. Botany Bay is also close by.
Taren Point’s history is rich. It started as Comyns Point. Then it became Cummins Point. Finally it was called Commins Point. These names possibly honor a local resident. The exact origin of the name Taren Point remains a mystery. Thomas Holt a significant figure in the area’s history owned vast land stretching from Sutherland to Cronulla. Holt Road commemorates him. Early settlers were fishermen oystermen and small farmers. The area was sparsely populated. Land subdivision began in 1911. Agents marketed it as a perfect marine suburb. Ferries provided access. Eventually a road connected Taren Point to the Shire’s main roads. A vehicular punt improved access in 1916. The Captain Cook Bridge replaced the punt in 1965. This bridge significantly improved access.
Life in Taren Point wasn’t always smooth sailing. A cane toad outbreak occurred in 2010. Authorities controlled the infestation by 2014. No cane toads have been seen since.
Today Taren Point boasts a diverse community. The 2021 census recorded 1879 residents. Many were born in Australia. Others hailed from England China and Greece. English is the most common language. Greek Arabic Mandarin Macedonian and Italian are also spoken. Anglican Catholic and those with no religious affiliation are the largest religious groups.
Taren Point offers various attractions. Taren Point Public School educates local children. Gwawley Oval hosts the Taren Point Touch Football Association. Woolooware Shores Anglican Retirement Villages provide comfortable retirement living. Apsley Field serves as the Giants Baseball Club’s home ground. The Taren Point Bowling Club home of the Taren Point Power offers recreation.
