Rising above Sha Tin is the Tao Fong Shan Cross a symbol of faith and cultural fusion. This is no ordinary cross. It stands as a testament to a unique chapter in Hong Kong’s history.

In 1930 Norwegian Lutheran missionary Karl Ludvig Reichelt sought a place to share the Gospel. He envisioned a center where Christian teachings could resonate with Chinese culture. Reichelt purchased an abandoned hill for $3780 Mexican silver. He named it Tao Fong Shan meaning “Words of God and Holy Spirit Carried in the Wind.”

Reichelt enlisted a Danish architect to design the Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre. They built a complex in traditional Chinese style. This included a chapel library office pavilions and residences. This design choice mirrored Reichelt’s earlier work in Nanjing. There he aimed to present Christianity within a Chinese context. He hoped to engage Buddhist monks and Taoist priests in dialogue. Tao Fong Shan was intended to attract monks from nearby temples.

Look closely at the details around you. You will see how the architecture blends Chinese aesthetics with Christian symbolism. The bell of the chapel sits under a Chinese-style roof. Dragon fish adorn the Christian cross. The 12-meter cross is the hallmark of the Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre. It stands facing Sha Tin and the Shing Mun River.

Since 1947 the Art Ministry at Tao Fong Shan has produced hand-painted Canton porcelains. Monks create these delicate pieces. You can visit their porcelain shop and support this fading handicraft.

The Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre is a Grade II historical building. It serves as a religious institution and a place of artistic expression. It offers a tranquil escape from Hong Kong’s urban hustle. As you stand here consider the vision of Karl Ludvig Reichelt. He sought to bridge cultures through faith and understanding. The Tao Fong Shan Cross remains a symbol of this enduring mission. It embodies harmony and spiritual exchange.
