From a peaceful hillside overlooking Sha Tin, Tao Fong Shan Christian Cemetery offers a unique blend of serenity and history. Tao Fong Shan Christian Cemetery isn’t just a final resting place. It’s a testament to a fascinating intercultural exchange. The cemetery is part of the Tao Fong Shan Christian Centre, a complex founded in 1930 by Norwegian missionary Karl Ludvig Reichelt. Reichelt, arriving in China in 1904, developed a vision to share the gospel with Buddhists. His work began in Hunan province, then in Nanjing with the Jing Fong Shan. The turmoil of the Chinese civil war led him to relocate to Hong Kong in 1930. Here, on a hill purchased for 3,705 Mexican gold coins, he established Tao Fong Shan. Danish architect Johannes Prip-Moller designed the unique Chinese-style buildings that grace the Centre. Reichelt himself rests here, buried in 1952 within the grounds of Tao Fong Shan Christian Cemetery. The cemetery provides a poignant reminder of his dedication. It’s a place where the stories of lives lived intersect with the tranquility of the natural world. Tao Fong Shan Christian Cemetery invites contemplation and reflection. It offers a unique perspective on the fusion of Eastern and Western traditions within a spiritual context.
