Legends say dragons guard this sacred ground. That makes Tanashi Shrine a unique destination in Tokyo. Today we will discover its rich history and spiritual significance.

Tanashi Shrine offers a serene escape from Tokyo’s busy life. It is located in Nishitokyo. The shrine’s peaceful atmosphere and traditional Japanese architecture make it a special place to visit.

Originally known as Jodengongen, Tanashi Shrine dates back to the Kamakura period. It was first located in Kitayato. In the 17th century, the shrine moved to its current location. In 1872, it was renamed Tanashi Shrine. Five smaller shrines merged into Tanashi Shrine in 1910. Then in 1949, the Otori Great God from Osaka’s Otori Shrine was enshrined here.

Shinatsuhiko-no-Mikoto and Shinatobe-no-Mikoto are the main deities. They have been worshipped since the shrine’s beginning. They are known as gods of wind. Okuninushi-no-Mikoto is also among the main deities.

Tanashi Shrine reveres the Five Dragon Gods. This is based on the Five Elements philosophy. Shinatsuhiko-no-Mikoto and Shinatobe-no-Mikoto represent the Golden Dragon in the main hall. Black, White, Red, and Blue Dragons are enshrined around the shrine grounds.

Throughout the year, Tanashi Shrine hosts various festivals and community events. The Dragon God Festival occurs every September 19th. It honors the Golden Dragon and the four other Dragon Gods. Special viewings of the main hall and worship hall take place each November.

The main hall showcases the craftsmanship of Shimamura Shumpyo. He was a renowned Edo-period craftsman. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government recognizes the main hall as a Tangible Cultural Property. In 2018, both the main and worship halls became Especially Important Historical Buildings for Scenic Beauty.

Tanashi Shrine is easily accessible from Tanashi Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line. It is only a six-minute walk away.

Remember to visit early for a peaceful experience. Bring your camera to capture the beautiful scenery. If your visit aligns with a festival, partake in the local traditions. Show respect for local customs and traditions. Especially when participating in rituals.

Tanashi Shrine is more than just a historical site. It’s a place where spirituality and nature meet. It invites you to contemplate. It allows you to appreciate Japanese culture. Take a moment to connect with the serene environment. Enjoy the beauty of this hidden gem.
