Founded in 1889 by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore Tampa Unity Church is a spiritual movement not a separate church or denomination. It’s dedicated to helping people of all faiths apply positive spiritual principles to improve their lives. The Fillmores’ story is remarkable. Myrtle’s serious illness led her to explore the power of positive prayer. After countless hours of prayer and affirmations she recovered. She lived a healthy life for 45 more years. Charles was a curious scholar studying world religions and philosophies. He saw the connection between religion and science a link now being explored by quantum physicists.
Together they started writing about their beliefs. The Unity Movement began with Modern Thought a national magazine. Wee Wisdom a children’s magazine followed. Then came Lessons in Truth a book translated into eleven languages. Silent Unity a prayer ministry was established. For over a century people of all faiths have called upon them for prayer requests. Each request is held in silent prayer for thirty days.
In 1903 the first Unity Church was formed. The Unity School of Christianity handled the Fillmores’ publishing and educational work. Daily Word a devotional publication started in 1924 is still in print today. Many read it daily without even realizing it’s a Unity publication. Charles Fillmore defined Unity as a link in the educational movement started by Jesus Christ. The goal is to prove the truth in Christianity. Their teachings aren’t new. They help people use eternal truth.
Tampa Unity Church embraces five basic principles. There is only one power and presence God. Our essence is of God making us inherently good. We are co-creators with God shaping reality through our thoughts. Prayer and meditation align us with God. We live the truth we know through thoughts words and actions. These principles guide the community. They welcome people of all faiths backgrounds and orientations. This welcoming spirit is the heart of Tampa Unity Church. It’s a place to explore spirituality to find peace and to connect with a supportive community.
