Tucked away on a small hill at No. 9 Blue Pool Road in Happy Valley sits the Tam Kung & Tin Hau Temple. It’s a place of double devotion, dedicated to two powerful sea deities. The Tam Kung & Tin Hau Temple shares its space with a Tin Hau Temple, situated at the back. This pairing of temples dedicated to sea deities creates a unique spiritual hub in Happy Valley.

The Tam Kung & Tin Hau Temple wasn’t always at this location. Originally, it resided in the former Wong Nai Chung Village, closer to the current Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital. However, urban development threatened its existence. In 1901, the temple was relocated to its current hilltop location. A popular story tells of Tam Kung appearing to a young boy in a dream. The deity guided the boy to the very spot where the Tam Kung & Tin Hau Temple now stands. This divine intervention cemented the site as the chosen location for the temple’s new home. Along with the Tam Kung Temple, the Tin Hau Temple also moved in 1901. Both temples have been under the management of the Chinese Temples Committee since 1929, ensuring their preservation and continued significance.

Tam Kung, also known as Tam Tai Sin, holds a special place in the hearts of those whose ancestors hail from Huizhou or Chaoshan in Guangdong province. He’s revered for his ability to forecast weather and is often depicted as a youthful deity. Legend has it that he achieved immortality at the young age of twenty, ascending to the heavens from Nine-dragon Mountain in Huizhou. His reputation as a healer even in childhood adds another layer to the reverence he receives. While Tam Kung is the focus, the temple’s dual dedication extends to Tin Hau, the goddess of the sea. This pairing makes the Tam Kung & Tin Hau Temple a fascinating place to explore. It offers a glimpse into the beliefs and traditions surrounding seafaring and the protective powers attributed to these deities.
