Established in 1900, Takushoku University Bunkyo Campus holds a unique place in Tokyo’s history. It started as the Taiwan Association School. Its founder, Prince Taro Katsura, later became Prime Minister. The original goal was to train individuals for Taiwan’s development. The name changed to Oriental Association Vocational School in 1907. Then, in 1918, it became Takushoku University. The name itself, “Takushoku”, reflects Japan’s colonial ambitions. It means “development and industrialization”, but also “colonization”. The university aimed to produce graduates who would contribute to the development of Japan’s overseas territories. Takushoku University Bunkyo Campus stands as a testament to this era. After World War II, the university briefly changed its name to Koryo University. It returned to Takushoku University in 1952. Takushoku University Bunkyo Campus has five faculties today: Commerce, Political Science and Economics, Foreign Languages, International Studies, and Engineering. It’s also known for its renowned karate club, founded around 1924. This club has trained numerous prominent karate instructors and competitors. It’s no wonder that Takushoku University Bunkyo Campus boasts a remarkable list of alumni. From martial arts masters to politicians and entertainers, the university’s influence is far-reaching.
