Remember the chilling tales whispered about Ping Shan Tat Tak School? This abandoned school in Hong Kong is not just a relic of the past. It is a place steeped in eerie legends. Tat Tak School is known as one of the city’s most haunted locations.
Founded in 1931 the school first opened its doors in Yu Kiu Ancestral Hall. Tat Tak School aimed to educate children in the nearby villages. It marked one of the New Territories’ first educational institutions. Classes were suspended during the dark days of the Japanese occupation. The school bravely resumed its mission in 1943. It operated from Tat Tak Communal Hall before returning to the ancestral hall a year later.
As enrollment soared Tat Tak School expanded. It occupied the adjacent Ng Kwai Tong in the early 1950s. This former study hall accommodated the growing number of students. By 1965 the school had outgrown its ancestral home. The Tangs funded a new campus. Tat Tak School relocated to this new site. The two-story main building was designed in a U-shape. The hall stood at the center. Classrooms extended along the two wings. The open area featured a basketball court surrounded by trees. In 1975 Tat Tak School reached its peak. Over 700 students and more than 20 teachers filled its halls. It was the largest primary school in the Yuen Long District. Sadly declining enrollment led to its closure in 1998. The gates were locked. Tat Tak School was abandoned.
But the story does not end there. Graves surround the school. These graves fueled ghost stories. One tale speaks of the headmistress. She wore a red dress. The story says that she committed suicide in the bathroom after a rape. Her ghost is said to haunt the school. But there are no police records to confirm this. Another version claims it was the headmaster’s wife who died at home.
In 2011 a group of students visited the abandoned Tat Tak School. They heard whispers and saw a woman in red. Three girls fainted. One student claimed to see horrific visions. Some say the students experienced hallucinations. Others believe in the ghost stories.
Filmmakers now use Tat Tak School for movies. The school featured in National Geographic’s “I Wouldn’t Go in There”. Even though villagers deny the stories, the legends persist. Tat Tak School remains a captivating place. It blends history and mystery. It reminds us of the power of urban legends. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, the eerie atmosphere is undeniable.
