Tak Nga Secondary School was established in 1962. This Catholic girls’ school, sponsored by the Sisters Announcers of the Lord, has been nurturing generations of students for over six decades. Tak Nga Secondary School isn’t just a school. It’s a living testament to the vision of its founder, Reverend Joseph Cucchiara. He, a Salesian priest born in Sicily, Italy, in 1889, dedicated his life to education and service. After serving in hospitals during World War I, he arrived in Guangdong, China, in 1911, where he established numerous schools and churches. Later, he moved to Hong Kong, where he continued his work, eventually leading to the founding of Tak Nga Primary School and then Tak Nga Secondary School. The school’s name, “Tak Nga,” carries a profound meaning. “Tak” is derived from St. Theresa, representing the school’s commitment to fostering virtuous character. “Nga” comes from St. Jacob, symbolizing the spirit of perseverance. The motto of Tak Nga Secondary School is “Wisdom, Courage, Diligence, Perseverance” (智勇勤毅). These four pillars guide the students in their academic pursuits and personal growth. Tak Nga Secondary School stands on Tat Chee Avenue in Yau Yat Chuen. Its story began in 1954 when the Sisters of the Announcers of the Lord initiated their mission in Cheung Sha Wan. With the support of Father Cucchiara, they received permission to establish a school in 1956. The journey began with the primary school, which opened its doors in 1961. The secondary section followed shortly after, in 1962. The secondary school building, completed in 1964, stands as a symbol of the school’s expansion and commitment to providing quality education. Initially, Tak Nga Secondary School offered both Chinese and English streams. However, reflecting the changing landscape of Hong Kong, the school transitioned to a fully English-medium institution in 1980. Today, Tak Nga Secondary School continues its mission of empowering young women through education. The school’s dedication to fostering wisdom, courage, diligence, and perseverance in its students is a tribute to the enduring legacy of Father Cucchiara.
