Opened in 1957 Taita College stands proudly in Lower Hutt. It wasn’t just a school. Initially it was known as Taita College and Community Centre. It served the growing Taita area. Both education and community thrived within its walls. In the 1970s community activities moved elsewhere. Taita College then focused solely on education.
Taita College boasts a diverse student body. It reflects the rich multicultural tapestry of Lower Hutt. Roughly equal numbers of Pakeha Maori and Pasifika students attend. Smaller numbers represent other ethnicities. Students can identify with multiple ethnicities.
The eight-hectare campus is impressive. Classrooms science labs and technology workshops are available. There’s a library a gymnasium and sports fields. The performing arts centre is shared with the community. It provides ample opportunities for both students and local groups.
Taita College offers the National Certificate of Educational Achievement NCEA. Students pursue levels 1 2 and 3. The college offers traditional academic subjects. It also boasts a strong vocational education program. Students can explore automotive engineering building and construction and hospitality.
Today Taita College continues to evolve. It serves the community it was built to serve. It embodies the vibrant spirit of Taita.
