“Loyalty and Filial Piety” is the core spirit of Tai Wong Yeh Shrine. This spirit integrates loyalty and filial piety into actions. It cares for the people and serves society. Let me tell you the captivating story of Tai Wong Yeh Tun.

Tai Wong Yeh Tun is a testament to Hong Kong’s rich cultural heritage. It is not merely a temple. It is a symbol of faith, unity and community spirit. Tai Wong Yeh Temple’s core mission is simple. It aims to pray for blessings. It eliminates disasters. It ensures peace and happiness for all.

The story of Tai Wong Yeh begins in the early Republican period. Local fishermen made an incredible discovery. They found a statue of Tai Wong Yeh in a stream. That stream is now a nullah. In 1983, the government recognized the importance of this site. They allocated land to build a Tai Wong Yeh Shrine. The temple’s construction finished in 1986. You can find it at the intersection of Nam Long Shan Road and Heung Yip Road in Wong Chuk Hang. It stands proudly next to the nullah.

Tai Wong Yeh’s identity is quite interesting. Some believe he is the god of plague. He once saved people from a deadly epidemic. Others see him as the patron saint of fishermen. He ensures a good harvest and community harmony. In fact, Tai Wong Yeh may comprise three figures. They were said to be brothers. Some think they might be “Kings of Three Mountains” from the Chaoshan area. They used to have different birthdays. But people celebrate Tai Wong Yeh’s Birthday together. This is on the 8th day of the 5th Lunar Month.

Tai Wong Yeh Tun faced challenges over time. The original shrine was in a transportation hub. It was unfortunately demolished. But the villagers’ devotion did not waver. In 1982, the government stepped in. They allocated land at 875 Nam Long Shan Road. This was for the reconstruction of Tai Wong Yeh Shrine. Benefactors generously supported the project. The new shrine was completed three years later. It stands on the very site where the golden statue first appeared.

There were originally five Hoklo fishermen clans. These were the Shek, Chung, Sue, Tsui and Lee families. They lived on Yuen Chau Tsai Island. These clans raised funds. This was to reconstruct Tai Wong Yeh Temple. They celebrated Tai Wong Yeh’s Birthday every year. The Birthday Festival was an annual highlight. In the late 1970s, Tai Po downtown was under development. The government evened out Yuen Chau Tsai Island. This was for new roads and buildings. The villagers had no place to hold their activities. The festival moved to Feng Shui Square. This is opposite the Tin Hau Temple near old Tai Po Market.

The birthday of Tai Wong Yeh is celebrated annually. It is on the first day of the third lunar month. Residents hold celebrations. They express gratitude and pray for blessings.

The architecture of the Tai Wong Ye Shrine in Wong Chuk Hang is modern. The shrine uses rammed earth construction. Golden tiles and white walls adorn it. Devotees donated porcelain paintings. The shrine also worships other deities. These include the Four-Faced Buddha, Guan Gong, Tai Sui and the Gods of Wealth. You’ll also find the Three Treasures Buddha and a Hundred Families Shrine.

Tai Wong Yeh Tun is more than just a place of worship. It embodies the values of loyalty, filial piety, unity and harmony. As you stand before this shrine, remember its history. Think about the community it represents. Appreciate its enduring spirit.
