Sixty feet tall and 800 feet wide. That’s the Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir dam. Built between 1912 and 1917 it’s a marvel of engineering. This impressive structure forms part of the Tai Tam Reservoirs group. This group of reservoirs is located in the Tai Tam Country Park on Hong Kong Island.

The Tai Tam Reservoirs aren’t just functional. They’re a vital part of Hong Kong’s history. The Tai Tam scheme began in 1872. It was put on hold because of an economic slump. The project resumed in 1882 and was almost finished by 1888. Even then the water supply proved insufficient. That’s why they built the Tai Tam Tuk dam.

The Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir wasn’t just about water. Its construction created jobs. It boosted Hong Kong’s economy. The dam’s design by Daniel Jaffe was innovative for its time. Twelve arches supported by granite columns held up Tai Tam Road connecting Stanley and Chai Wan. The road is vital for transporting goods and people.

Governor Henry May announced the reservoir’s completion on February 2 1918. The reservoir continues to operate today. It supplies much of Hong Kong Island’s water. Imagine the people who relied on this reservoir for drinking water. Think of the families who depended on it for daily needs. The reservoir represents ingenuity and resilience.

The Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail opened in 2009. This trail highlights the architectural landmarks of the reservoir system. Twenty-two facilities around the Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir were declared monuments in 2009. These include pumping stations bridges the memorial stone and the dam itself. They are a testament to Hong Kong’s engineering heritage. The Tai Tam Reservour Road links the reservoirs from Wong Nai Chung Gap to Tai Tam. It’s a restricted road but a key part of this vital water system.
