Gazing across the expanse of Tai Tam Bay, one can almost feel the echoes of history whispering on the breeze. Tai Tam Bay, meaning “big pool” in Chinese, is a triangular body of water nestled between Stanley Peninsula, D’Aguilar Peak, and Tai Tam Tuk. This bay isn’t just a scenic vista. It holds layers of stories, from early settlements to wartime skirmishes. Tai Tam Bay was documented as early as January 1843 by HMS Sulphur, commanded by Sir Belcher and Sir Kellett. Back then, the area was romanized as Tytham. The bay itself covers about 8 square kilometers. It includes a narrow inlet leading to the inner bay area known as Tai Tam Harbour, and a much wider middle and outer bay. While Tai Tam Harbour boasts an average depth of about 3 meters, the middle bay deepens to 5 meters, and the outer bay reaches 9 meters. Imagine standing at the mouth of the bay, a span of approximately 2.2 kilometers. To the west, Tai Tai Head marks the southern end of Stanley Peninsula. To the east, Cape D’Aguilar stands sentinel on the D’Aguilar Peninsula. Tai Tam Bay is more than just water and land. It is a tapestry woven with threads of human experience and natural wonder. Within its embrace lies To Tei Wan, a small bay on the eastern side, home to the quaint To Tei Wan Village. In 1911, this village pulsed with the lives of 54 inhabitants. Close your eyes and imagine the bustling activity of Tai Tam Harbour. It was once a vibrant hub for Tanka boat people, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of the sea. Today, the legacy of these communities lives on in the villages that dot the coastline, each with its own unique story to tell. The scars of history are etched into the landscape of Tai Tam Bay. During World War II, this tranquil bay became a strategic point, witnessing fierce battles between Commonwealth and Japanese forces in December 1941. The echoes of these conflicts linger, reminding us of the sacrifices made and the resilience of those who lived through those turbulent times. Tai Tam Bay invites exploration. Whether you’re drawn to its historical significance, its diverse marine life, or the scenic beauty of the surrounding country park, Tai Tam Bay offers a rich and rewarding experience.
