Over 200000 square metres of calm await us at Tai Po Waterfront Park. This park is a hit weekend destination. It is not too far from urban sprawl in the New Territories.

Tai Po Waterfront Park opened in 1994. The park cost $210-million. However, it was not completed until 1997. That’s when the Tai Po Lookout Tower was created.

Let’s explore the impressive fixture amongst the lush greens. We can also see the slithering cycling tracks. The Lookout Tower grants a wide-reaching overview. It shows Tolo Harbour and the park’s gorgeous gardens.

The lookout tower is 32.4 metres high. Visitors get a panoramic view. They can see Tolo Harbour. They can also see the Tai Po Industrial Estate. The rugged countryside stretches back to the boundary with mainland China.

The plaques of the lookout tower depict the history of Tai Po. They show the struggle with the British army. That was when they originally entered the New Territories. The plaques depict the heroic resistance against the Japanese army. This happened during the occupation and prosperity after World War II.

Every year, the Tai Po Dragon Boat Race is held in the sea off the park.

Tai Po Waterfront Park has a wide range of public facilities. These include rest gardens. There are also sitting-out areas. You can visit an insect house. Walk along a 1.2 kilometres promenade along the harbor front. Use the jogging trail with fitness stations. See a 600-seat amphitheater.

Tai Po Waterfront Park also has the only dedicated model boat pool in Hong Kong. The park is the start of the popular cycle route to Tai Mei Tuk. Cycle hires are available in the park.

Explore the beautifully maintained flower plots. Visit a herb garden. Check out an educational insect house. Relax by the model boat pool.

The large lawn overlooking the harbour is a great place for a picnic.
