Established in 1964 Tai Po Old Market Public School began as an afternoon school. It served the communities of Tai Po Old Market Nam Chung and San Wai. The school was initially a simple village school. By 1984 the original school building needed to be demolished. The school applied for a new building in the same area. It was to become a regular half-day primary school. The government approved the application. The school board also registered as a limited company. This was to ensure sufficient space. Two years later the original school moved to a new location on On Cheung Road. Government policy pushed for full-day primary schools. However the On Cheung Road site remained too small. In 2001 the school entered a bidding process for its current site. The bid was successful. The school was originally slated to be named Tai Po Old Market Public Lee Kok Choi School. The new building was completed in 2002. The school officially moved to its current location. It became a fully independent full-day primary school. However the proposed name was not adopted. On February 18 2004 the school held its opening ceremony. The then Secretary for Education officiated. The school occupies a substantial 6400 square meters. It has 30 classrooms and various specialist rooms. A covered swimming pool was added later. The Tai Po Old Market Public School boasts a rich history and a bright future. Its legacy continues to shape the lives of its students. It remains a vital part of the Tai Po community. The school’s growth reflects the changing landscape of education in Hong Kong.
