Once Tai Peng Village had a school before World War II. Today, we explore the serene beauty and history of Tai Peng Village. This village sits on Lamma Island. It is northeast of Yung Shue Wan. Tai Peng means “big plateau”. The village rests on a hill. It is north of the Yung Shue Long valley.
Tai Peng Village is split into two parts. There is the older part named Tai Peng Kau Tsuen. It means “old village”. Then, there is the newer part, Tai Peng San Tsuen. That means “new village”.
Let’s wander through Tai Peng Tsuen. This village is mainly residential housing. About 100 to 200 people live here. Many houses are still in use. Most residents are elderly. Some houses are very old. They might be over 300 years old.
The village offers several facilities. There is a village hall for gatherings. You will see a small shrine for worship. There is a community garden. Also, there is a public shelter. Public toilets are available too.
Did you know Tai Peng Village was once more vibrant? There used to be a small grocery shop named Regent Stores. It closed in December 2015. But do not worry. A new shop opened in the same location. It is called Tai Peng Store. Queenie and Terrence run it.
In the late 1950s, Tai Peng had 154 people. Seventeen men worked at sea. Villagers raised pigs back then. They also grew vegetables.
Tai Peng is a recognized village. It falls under the New Territories Small House Policy. This policy impacts village affairs.
